Ashoke Sen, Atul Khare, Mario Miranda, Khurshid Khan, Qieyang Shenjie

Ashoke SenIndian theoretical physicist  won the $3 million Fundamental Physics Prize — more than double of what the Nobel Prize brings with it — for his research on string theory. Sen works at Allahabad’s Harish-Chandra Research Institute, which is funded by the Department of Atomic Energy.

Atul Khare: IFS 1984 batch officer. On June 1, 2011 UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon appointed Atul Khare of India to spearhead efforts to implement a reform agenda aimed at streamlining and improving the efficiency of the world body.[2][3] Khare, will lead the Change Management Team (CMT) at the UN, working with both departments and offices within the Secretariat and with other bodies in the UN system and the 193 member states. The CMT is tasked with guiding the implementation of a reform agenda at the UN that starts with the devising of a wide-ranging plan to streamline activities, increase accountability and ensure the organization is more effective and efficient in delivering its many mandates.


Mario João Carlos do Rosario de Brito Miranda: popularly known as Mario Miranda or Mario de Miranda- was an Indian cartoonist based in Goa. He was awarded the Padma  VibhushanMiranda had been a regular with The Times of India and other newspapers in Mumbai, including The Economic Times, though he got his popularity with his works published in The Illustrated Weekly of India. Miranda passed away in Dec2011.
Mohammad Khurshid Khan: was Pakistan deputy attorney general. On a visit to India, during kar seva he polished shoes of devotees. This action of his met with much criticism in Pakistanm and he was accused of defaming Pakistan. Khan was ultimately removed from his position by the Government of Pakistan. 

Qieyang Shenjie: first Tibetan origin Chinese athlete to have won an Olympic medal at the London 2012 Olympics.  She won a bronze medal in the women;s 20Km Race Walk. 
[In Race Walk events, an athlete must (to the human eye) be in contact with the ground at all times, unlike in running events, where both feet are momentarily off the ground. The leading leg must be straight from the moment it is first in contact with the ground, and the technique looks very different to ordinary walking. Athletes must be incredibly disciplined to fight the urge to break into a run for extra speed.]

Dr. Rao Papineni gets U.S. patent for cancer treatment. They have invented a system in which a nano-particle carries the payload of anti-cancer drug and releases it only in the cancerous cell, thus protecting healthy cells around.
