History Quiz 1

Hello Friends,

Since I have reoriented myself towards prelim prep, I will not be posting articles discussing current affairs issues for a few months. However I am preparing some Q&A on different topics and am posting the same for any use they can be to you. So here goes...

This is a history quiz. Questions are taken from the NCERT textbook and Spectrum. Answers will be posted a day later. Send in your answers through comments and lets see how well you do. :)

    1. 1803 [In 1803 the East India Company’s forces led by Lord Lake captured Delhi after defeating the Daulat Rao Sindia’s troops (Daulat Rao was the successor of Mahadji) at the battle of Patparganj].- http://pd.cpim.org/2007/0617/06172007_1857.htm

    2. 1707 AD

    3. During the succession battle of Jahandar Shah (Aurangzeb's grandson) in 1712, Zulfikar Khan, the strongest noble, supported him and went on to become the Wazir.

    4. 'Ijarah' is revenue farming whereby the Mughal govt contracted with revenue farmers and middlment to pay the govt a fixed amount of money, while they were free to collect whatever they could from the peasant. This was a departure from Todar Mal's policy where a fixed land revenue was collected from the farmers.

    5. When Nizam-ul-Mulk Asaf Jah founded the state of Hyderabad in 1724.

    6. 1738-39 during Muhammad Shah's rule.

    7. 1748-1767. [He fought the 3rd Battle of Panipat with the Marathas in 1761].

    8.Ahmad Shah Abdali was a general of Nadir Shah who established control over Afghanistan after Nadir Shah's death.

    9.Shah Alam II, Mir Qasim of Bengal and Shuja-ud-Daulah of Awadh in 1764.

    10. 'Succession states' refer to those states that arose in the Mughal Empire after various nobles asserted their power and ruled over these areas almost independently. Although many of them continued to recognize the Mughal emperor and send tributes, they exercised total control over their state.

    11.Because his efforts at reforming the administration were being frustrated by the Emperor Muhammad Shah.
